Unglaublich!
Family of penguins in lederhosen originally found, inexplicably, here. Perhaps the German children's classic Gregor oder Wohin die Träume tragen (Gebundene Ausgabe) [plot synopsis in English] will illuminate the situation.

Penguin sweater update!
Since we first covered the Penguin Jumpers Project in November, we've come across a few more pictures of Australia's fairy penguins in their cozy new sweaters at Buffoonery.org and Factmonster.com. We won't be sated until we can hug them ourselves.

Cute Antarctica
Cool Antarctica: "Newly born Weddell seal pups have to be some of the worlds cutest creatures as they flop about the ice in the early days after their birth, not able to co-ordinate their over-sized flippers before they grow into them." See also: lone penguin walking off in a huff; Adelie penguin chick covered in mud; elephant seals being lazy together; watching boiling-hot water freeze in midair; playing peek-a-boo with young fur seals:
This particular seal followed me for about 20 minutes or so as we played a game of peek-a-boo, him in the sea and me behind the rocks. He might look a bit manic, but it was all great fun.
I'd hide behind a rock and he's wander up and down making the pouff-pouff sound then I'd jump out from the rock and he'd leap into the sea in mock panic. A couple of powerful strokes of the flippers and he'd turn back round, shoot out of the sea and land virtually at my feet - my turn to leap away in (not always mock) panic.

Penguin update: fitness, theft
AP: Penguins stand very still in winter, need exercise. (Video at Channel4.com.)
BBC: Baby penguin named Toga stolen from zoo, reward offered for return. "The penguin's mother is said to be pining for him... Zoo staff believe the popularity of the film March of the Penguins may have inspired the crime."

How to knit a sweater FOR A WEE PENGUIN
The Tasmanian Conservation Trust's Penguin Jumpers Project: "Over 15,000 jumpers were collected, which will be stored in Oil Spill Response Kits around Tasmania. In the case of a major oil spill, these jumpers will be used to help rehabilitate Little penguins (Eudyptula minor) that have been oil affected." (Via Chaos Theory and Extreme Craft.)
PENGUINS = CUTE
SWEATERS = CUTE
PENGUINS = TINY
By the substitution and transitive properties of adorableness,
PENGUINS + SWEATERS + TINY = CUTE X 3
CUTE!!!! (factorial factorial factorial factorial)

Naptime in Antarctica
Is there anything comfier than a fuzzy baby penguin under a fat grownup penguin? We doubt it.
Photograph from BrynJ on Flickr. Antarctic M also has awesome penguin pictures. They both live on an ice shelf.

Rabbit in moon has new friend
Most Adorable Headline of August (how did we miss this?): Robotic space penguin to hop across the Moon.
Pro: "Engineers at US defence contractor Raytheon, in Massachusetts, have developed a robot, dubbed the Lunar Penguin, that could one day bounce across perilous craters and imposing mountains on the Moon's craggy surface using a set of compact rocket boosters."
Con: It doesn't actually look like a penguin at all.

All hail Colonel Penguin!
Lance-Corporal Nils Olaf, a penguin, has recently been promoted to Colonel-in-Chief in the Norwegian Army. Some choice reporting on the matter:
"He was also given two medals - one to mark his new rank, and one for good service.
But because he's so small, he can only wear one of them at a time!"
Video of Penguin Col. Olav inspecting the troops can be seen here.
